This is a unique identifier for the image, independent from the file name. Some image processing
programs such as those from the Adobe Creative Suites recognise this identifier and preserve it
when subsequent versions of the image are saved. This element

- Will be generated by Adobe Photoshop on first write if no XMP block was present before.
- Will be generated by the MIDAS XMP metadata editor if not present.

• FilmWorkID

This is the only mandatory element (apart from the automatically generated ImageID) in the
MIDAS element set. The FilmWorkID tells the catalogue management system to which film an
image belongs. FilmWorkIDs are created upon import of filmographic data into the MIDAS
catalogue and can be found either as part of the page address (see Fig.2) or before the main title if
the user is logged in with editing privileges (see Fig.3).

• LocalFilmWorkID

This can be used to add a reference number or identifier to the film work within the context of the
partner archive. If an archive is using (or plans to use) XMP metadata for organizing image files within the
institution, then this can be used as an unambigous element for storing the reference from an
image to a film work.

• FilmWorkRel

This element describes the relationship between the image and the film work:

• Frame: The image is taken from a frame in the moving image
• Production Still: The image has been taken during the production, but is not a part of the moving image
• Advertising: The image has been taken from advertising material such as a poster, a press photograph, or advertisement.
• Other: None of the above.

• TimeOffset

If the picture is taken from a frame of the moving image, then this element can be used to indicate at which minute and second it occurs or which frame number it has in the image stream. Values separated with colons (":") are interpreted as [hour:]minute:second, values without a separator are to be treated as frame numbers. TimeOffsets from image metadata can be used for controlling media players if previews are made available as streaming media. A TimeOffset satement is only applicable if FilmWorkRel="Frame".

• Caption

This element is defined for any text that can be used as a caption for the image. An image can have captions in several languages and therefore setting the language attribute is mandatory. A caption text tagged as English will be stored twice: once with "en" tag, and a second time with the "x-default" language attribute. For compatibility with XMP applications that only support plain RDF literals without a language tag, a caption in English is also stored using an RDF predicate with the following URI:

• Place

An element for associating place names and/or geographical coordinates with the image. Places can be associated with the image in one of the following ways:

• depicts : The location is shown in the image. This may, or may not be, the location at which the image was taken (see below).

• taken at: The location from where the image was shot. This will usually be applied in combination with "depicts" (e.g. depicts: Mont Saint Michel, taken at: Avranches).
• implied: The difference between locations of the depicted object and the camera is insignificant, irrelevant, or unknown.

In XMP, the following sub-element for Place will be placed into an RDF "bag" collection associated with an individual Place. This allows for multiple instances of Place within an XMP metadata block.

• PlaceName

This is the name of the place to be associated with the image. It should be the name of a localisable geographic entity, i.e. not a fictious place from the film.

• UriRef

A UriRef within the context of Place can be used to identify the place with the aid of gazetteers, geographic thesauri, or other controlled vocabularies that offer publicly available identifiers under a URI namespace.

• GeoLat

A value for the latitude coordinate of the place, to be used for map-based geographic information systems. Format: deg°min'[sec"] (N|S) or decimal degrees positive/negative.

• GeoLong

A value for the longitude coordinate of the place, to be used for map-based geographic information systems. Format: deg°min'[sec"] (E|W) or decimal degrees positive/negative.

• Person

An element for associating persons with the image. Persons can be associated with images in the following ways:

• depicts : The person is visible in the image.
• created by: The person is the creator / photographer of the image.
• about: An object depicted in the image has a specific relationship with the person (e.g. the residence of the person, a unique piece of clothing belonging to the person, etc.).

Sub-elements

In XMP, the following sub-element for Person will be placed into an RDF "bag" collection associated with an individual Person. This allows for multiple instances of Person within an XMP metadata block.

• PersName

The name of the person. For persons known under more than one name or with different name spellings, preferably the one that applies to the image context or that is widely known. Note that names of characters played in fictional films should not be included here. These can be mentioned in the image caption.

• UriRef

A UriRef within the context of Person can be used to identify the person with the aid of name authority files, biographical databases or other sources that offer publicly available identifiers under a URI namespace.

• ImageProvenance

The name of an organisation or other agent that has supplied the image to the MIDAS partner archive. This can be used wherever the source of the image shall be displayed.

• UseRestriction

This statement specifies distribution restrictions for the image. It can be used for is intended primarily for software agents that distribute contents from MIDAS to other projects.

• European Film Gateway: can be made available to EFG, but not beyond.
• Europeana: can be made available to EFG and from there to Europeana.
• CC-BY-NC-ND: generally available for non-commercial purposes (Creative Commons)
• CC-BY: generally available, only attribution required (Creative Commons)
• see rights statement: restrictions are specified in a document that can be retrieved via an

• DisplayRank

If the image is a part of a series representing a storyboard, then a display order should be given.
This element can be used to attach a sequence number to an individual image that is a part of a
series. Note that for sequences of frames taken from a film, software agents may choose to evaluate
TimeOffsets for ordering the presentation sequence. In these cases, a DisplayRank may not be
necessary.
