From the search engine to the film reel: A Beginners' Guide to the Use of filmarchives online.

Step 1: Enter your Query

Visit www.filmarchives-online.eu, select "search", and enter your query. We suggest to begin with a wide-ranging search using the operators "ALL" and "OR" for getting the big picture of what filmarchives online can offer you. You can either search all holdings, or select one or more holdings separately.

Step 2: Specify your Query

In the search results table, every page contains at least 10 film works. Presumably the search result is bigger than you expected. If you want to get a more concise result, you can specify your query by limiting it to single parts of film specifications and by adding technical details. The more detailed your query (for example by combining search terms with "AND", or searching in specific categories), the more precise the results will be.

Step 3: Localise Film Works

To make your research as comfortable as possible, filmarchives online provides a synopsis of every single film work at least in English. You can also use the technical specifications for confining your search to the film material you actually need. Every film work page contains information about the institution that holds the copy. Here you will find all the information necessary to contact the archive.

Step 4: Send a Request

If you are interested in viewing, licensing, or purchasing a moving image item, use our contact form to get in touch with the institution holding the copies you are interested in. If you are interested in re-using moving images for commercial or cultural purposes, we strongly advise you to request precise information on rights holders and licenses from the organisation holding the moving image.

If you have further questions, please feel free to contact us.

Cataloguing Specifications

The information contributed to filmarchives online from film archives is differing in several details. For example, not all institutions list keywords or depicted persons.
