Towards the end of the 18th century, in 1788, a company of border guards are guarding the Moravian-Hungarian border against Hungarian cattle thieves. When the bandits steal cattle from the farmer Vašut, the guards intervene and bring the animals back. The gang decides to get their revenge by attacking the village. Anka, an inkeeper's daughter working in her father's pub where the gang hold their meetings, falls in love with a border guard called Jura. She discovers the gang's plans and informs the guards so they manage to crush the attack. In the battle, however, farmer Vašut and the guard commander are killed. Calm prevails at the border once more and nothing can stand in the way of Jura's and Anka's happiness. The widow Anežka Vašutová rekindles her feelings for her long-time love, the guardsman Martin.
