Between 1959 and 1960 a lot of test launches are carried out, especially the weapon type ones. Rockets are developed to get launched from submarines. This constitutes a huge challenge for the scientists due to the fact that water influences the direction of rockets a lot.
For the first time there is a large quantity of data transmitted from orbit to earth so the government was able to analyse photos and predict storms.
Also because of satellites it was possible for the first time to communicate in realtime to the whole world.
In 1960 Russia sends two dogs in space and returns them back to earth save.
