Young husband and wife Pavla and Karel Urban return from the country to their flat in Prague during the period of Nazi terror following the assassination of Acting Reich Protector of Bohemia and Moravia Heydrich. Gestapo agents arrest Karel during the night accusing him of distributing leaflets. The investigating officer tries to persuade the young woman to tell him the names of her husband's accomplices. Pavla almost believes his promise that Karel will be released. She overcomes her moment of weakness and when her husband is executed without trial, she joins the resistance movement.
