In a brooding area two young of the nandu are hatching. The shell is pushed open from inside and a cap pushed off by means of neck and back. In cramplike phases of activity, the young free head and neck and then push the complete body free of the shell. When dried they display their yellow-black feathering. The remainder of the embryonal skin remains in the empty shell.
