Behaviour of the budgerigar (Melopsittacus undulatus) while the birds hatch and breed their off-spring. It is shown in detail how the female budgerigar provides the hatching bird with help in emerging from the egg and there is a discussion about the biological significance of this behaviour. The combinations of stimuli which initiate hatching are tested in a trial run. The young bird pips the shell as it moves within the egg. The bird's movements inside the egg were simulated using a Mexican jumping bean. The moth in this case is the Kasperyresia salticans which lives in the seed of a Mexican fruit. The caterpillar is set in motion by the warmth of the sun or of the brooding bird and then the seed begins to jump.
