In 1989 Director Lew Hohmann portrayed a female supermarket cashier. His film tells the story of a divorced mother of six and how she manages everyday life in the GDR. The film also reports on the increasingly apparent political changes in the country. The title "Ash Wednesday" is a metaphor for these changes.
The film sketches out the everyday life of Angelika Wettstein, a single mother of six living in Berlin. She is working as a cashier at "Pappelallee" supermarket in Prenzlauer Berg. She has no financial worries and no interest in politics. She is living an unproblematic, but also grey, average life.
