Platynereis lebt in selbstgesponnenen Röhren, die dem Untergrund angeheftet sind. Geschlechtsreife Tiere (Heteronereis) verlassen die Wohnröhren tageszeitlich und mondphasenbezogen koordiniert. Beim Laichtanz schwimmen die Weibchen in engen, die Männchen in weiteren Kreisen und entlassen die Geschlechtsprodukte ins freie Wasser. Danach verenden die leeren Hüllen. Die Trochophora entwickelt sich, ohne Nahrung aufzunehmen, zum Jungwurm. Während am Hinterende neue Rumpfsegmente sprossen, wandelt sich das vordere Parapodienpaar vom Lokomotions- zum Tastanhang um.
