    Résumé:
  • eng
In cold air, when transported over warm surfaces - here the waters of the Great Lakes in winter time -, mesoscale convergence and divergence patterns are generated by the same mechanism as the sea breeze circulation, i.e. differential heating. The two very short scenes shown here demonstrate, how stable cold air is advected across the Great Lakes producing almost stationary large-scale conditions, narrow bands of very different local weather characteristics such as clear skies next to continouos convective precipitation can be observed. During the period represented by this film, cities and villages under the shown persistent cloud plumes in the lee of the Lakes were seriously affected by lasting high rates of snow fall.
