This single channel video projection examines the three landscapes around Las Vegas: desert, suburb and the casino-strip. Cinematographer, visual artist and utterly bored resident of this city, James Cho, reflects and refracts the concepts of space and time through comparing geology and speed of tourism. The sounds of the Vegas strip, as a counterpoint, not only calls attention to the indexical referent of that which makes this city most pronounced and connected, but also meditate on the categorization of the suburb-desert. Formally, working in the digital realm echoes the impermanence of ever-changing architecture in the Vegas strip. Conventionally, such a state of fragility would lead to an awareness of that which is precious, however, with art in the age of digital reproduction-similar to the hotel/casino architecture-that aura of preciousness dissipates. As a growing city, the massive scale of this continual transformation appears outside of the strip as well with the expanding suburbia, and consequently the inevitable civil engineering into the desert. This video, Desert Suburb Vegas Suburb Desert, operates as a contemplation of Las Vegas as a city that exhibits the ephemeral and collides it with construction as a means of commerce, transportation and living.
