The film shows which manipulatory ability the Ateles geoffroyi is capable of when grasping small objects. This is demonstrated on single handed pickup of food whereby the test animals (adult males and females, caught wild) are offered successively slices of carrots, ground nuts and sunflower seeds, objects of diminishing size, which can be grasped from a platform through the bars of the cage. Depending on size, shape and orientation of the object, preparatory hand movements always take place first under visual control, the grasping pattern. The dependency of the grasping pattern and grasping on the orientation of the object is demonstrated with carrot slices placed flat or upright. When grasping carrot slices the lack of a thumb is unimportant. The object is in most cases grasped at the first attemp by means of flexion of all fingers against the palm. Noticeable however is the regular stong pronation movement of the hand when positioning. And for the first time here the gripping tail also comes into action. With the small objects grasping is undertaken almost exclusively with the forefinger. It holds the object within the three joints or uses the thenar as support. Several attempts are needed to grasp a seed.
