Recent studies demonstrated that asthma is a disease associated with inappropriate overzealous inflammatory responses. In order to visualize inflammatory responses associating with this disease, new filming methods using a Calcium microscope, a scanning electron microscope, and immuno-histochemical staining were developed. The film shows a sequential inflammatory event in the animal model of asthma which begins from degranulation of eosinophils caused by antigens. Next, one of adhesions, ICAM-1, is induced in endothelium, leukocytes migrate out of the bloodstream, and degranulation of mast cells occurs. Accumulation and degranulation of eosinophils are characteristic phenomena for asthma, and they have been filmed for the first time.
