New thalli grow out of the gemmae of the livermoss Marchantia; they branch dichotomously forming gemmae cups on the dorsal and rhizoids on the ventral side. The gemmae cups originate in the parietal invaginations and produce the gemmae to allow spreading of the plant. Time-lapse.
