Men assembled for the grasshopper game are grunting and stamping a strict rhythm which determines when each man in turn jumps sideways over the back of the man in the centre. It is considered to be a mistake if a man is unprepared for the jump or gets out of rhythm. Such mistakes take place if the jumper's improvised steps in between the individual jumps are too extravagant. The centre man reprimands a player for his distracting behaviour.
