Disillusionment with Versailles took many forms, mostly overreactive. Fierce nationalism, distrust of all things foreign (intensified by the Red Scare) and WASPish chauvinism manifest in every degree from the quota system to the Ku Klux Klan. The growing popularity of radio had a dual effect: it both helped to standardize the American self-image and to spread enough foreign news to convince people that the rest of the world could not be ignored.
