The film shows the performance by a religious minstrel or bard (ma ni pa). The man wears a special red head-gear, holds a textbook and a staff-like ceremonial arrow in his hands. From time to time he lifts the right hand to his ear, a gesture symbolizing his spiritual inspiration. He axplains 4 paintings or Thanka, depicting saints and deities. In order to make the whole event more ceremonial, a small altar is set up in front of the Thanka, on which the pious lay people deposit small gifts of money for the ma ni pa. Moreover they turn their prayer-wheels, pray with rosaries in hand and utter mantras to add in this way to their personal merit which will hopefully result in a good rebirth.
