In the summer of 1941, a contingent of the Greek army began to assemble in Egypt. The area spanning Egypt, Palestine, the Lebanon and Syria served as a basis for its operations. The Middle East contingent of the Greek army took part in the battle of El Alamein. The mass, disorderly recruitment of volunteers created political complications. Initially, conflicts between monarchists and republicans broke out. In 1943 the EAM movement began to assert itself and the ideological conflict escalated ominously. In April 1944, the formation of the ‘mountain government’ triggered off the mutiny of the Greek armed forces in the Middle East. A little later, in May, the Lebanon Conference took place in tense circumstances.
