Main (replacement) title (0.13). Shot of a large crowd (possibly outside the Ferry
station entrance) coming out of two archways of a building. A weight- machine (?) is on one side
of an archway and a large notice board is attached to the wall on the other side. The crowd are
mainly men, and a mixture of ages, with some better dressed than others. A small scruffy-looking
boy walks by looking at the camera (0.28). Most of the men are wearing coats and bowler hats, and
one or two are smoking pipes (0.35). Two boys stop in front of the camera grinning (0.43) before
moving on. A younger boy stands in the moving crowd looking over at the camera (0.47). Three men
in the crowd (one portly with a moustache and bowler hat, the other two thinner and wearing flat
caps and scarves) look as though they are either badly blacked-up or have sooty/ dirty faces
(0.55). More people pass by - a mixture of all sexes and ages. A woman pushes a large pram and
meets a man coming out of the archway (1.15). Behind her the same scruffy boy as before pulls up
his socks (1.18). Many of the people are carrying bags or packages. A boy with a large bunch of
flowers (possibly selling them?) goes by (1.22). Behind him two boys struggle with a large bread
basket. A woman and man with three well-dressed children (1.31). More people come out of the
archways, more of a mix of men, women and children than the first part of the fillm (2.33 mins.).
Note:- the three men who appear in shot (0.55) are an oddity. They clearly have dark faces, but
do not look racially black. They do not look like entertainers. It could be soot or oil - in
which case they could be workers on their way home. However, none of their clothing looks
particularly dirty - one of them is wearing a very light coloured cap and scarf. Also the heading
of this film is exactly the same as the film on the tape that precedes it. There is no shot of a
ferry or dockside in it. Unless, the building seen is the entrance to the ferry station, the
title may be an error. It looks as though most of the crowd are people going to or from work. The
poorly-dressed scruffy boy who appears at (0.28) materialises several times throughout the film
in the crowd and once leaning against the entrance wall in the background. He appears to be on
his own.
