Dr Šerk, a collector of folksongs, arrives at the remote village of Lesov. He is enchanted by the sounds of sixteen-year-old Madla Satranová singing, so he records her voice for broadcast on radio. Šerk's friend, the composer Jaroslav Klán, has formed a choir from a group of orphans which he is training. Šerk brings the orphan Madla to his group. The young girl helps the housekeeper Nána by looking after the children. The only person who is openly hostile towards Madla is Klán's fiancée, the singer Karstenová. Klán is in financial difficulties, so Madla is glad to be able to contribute her fees for her performances on the radio. Madla comes of age and has to hide the fact that she now loves Klán. Klán's children's choir is to sing at a party given for foreign music publishers. Karstenová tries to prevent Madla from performing and deliberately pours wine over her. The girl, however, quickly changes into a Lesov folk costume. Their success brings an offer for the choir to tour abroad. Klán, however, falls ill and Dr Šerk accompanies the children instead. After a successful concert in Madrid the ensemble returns home, but without Madla. She had chanced upon her wealthy long-lost uncle who willingly adopts her.
