The freighter GMS "Athene", loaded with 2000 tons of coal, is shown leaving the port of Duisburg-Ruhrort. In order to demonstrate the possibilities of the modern river navigation, we are following the freighter's non stop route to Mannheim. Images of daily life on board accompany scenes of maneuvers and landscapes along the Rhine. Encounters with ships from other nations emphasize the importance of the Rhine as an international traffic hub.
