The fifteen-year-old daughter of the raftsman, the shop assistant Pepča, a merry, playful girl who has not been spoiled by life, falls mandly in love with the handsome young man Véna, owner of a merri-go-round. In a naive attempt to get him to notice her she steals a few ribbons from the shop and, humiliated, she has to leave her job. She leaves with Véna and his evil mother to go travelling round the world. She is unhappy as Véna's unpleasant character becomes more apparent with each day. When he finally rejects her and drives her away, Pepča returns to Prague and seeks out her mason brother on the building site to ask him to help her find favour with her parents once more. They, however, cannot forgive her, her behaviour has sullied the honour of the Mestek family of raftsmen. Pepča, in her despair, jumps from the scaffolding to her death.
