In the garden the layer of sand covering the fertile soil is removed from the piece of ground to be sown with lucerne. The soil is turned with the hoe, then small seed-beds are shaped with the hands. Fertilizer is squattered on and mixed with the earth. Water is fetched in buckets from the well and poured on the seed-beds covered with a piece of mat to distribute the water evenly and to prevent the seed being swept off. A second garden is watered by a draw-well operating on the principle of the shaduf.
