The treatment of the First Law begins with an explanation of the concept of internal energy. A gas enclosed in a flask represents a system whose conditions are illustrated on the surface of state whilst mechanical and electrical work is introduced into the system. The changes occur along isotherms, isobares and isochores. Adiabatic processes take place without an exchange of heat with the environment. They are distinguished by particular properties and are illustrated with the aid of a special surface which relates all values of the internal energy to a given starting point irrespective of the path traversed. Therefore changes in internal energy and work adiabatically introduced into the system are equivalent to each other.
