Three large-scale waves travel eastwards, in the westerlies. They cross the Rocky Mountains (the last one only going to do so), in three different stages of almost classical development: (1) over Denver, Col. (marked by a dot), on November 19, a wave just re-integrates into a mature cyclone, after having crossed the mountains. Strong convective clouds develop (Nov.20) along the cold front over the southern states. Over the eastern states (Nov.21) the upper level dry air surges ahead of the low level cold frontal cloud band. (2) On November 19, a long N/S-extending cold frontal cloud band over the eastern Pacific moves towards the Rocky Mountains and develops a wave (Nov.20), which disintegrates when crossing the mountain range. On November 21, it starts to re-integrate, having the same shape and position as the cyclone two days before. (3) On November 20, a long N/S-extending cold frontal cloud band appears at the horizon, over the Pacific Ocean, and moves eastwards, into a position identical to the one of the preceding cyclone two days before. The three individual systems may well be considered as time-to-space conversions of only one system embedded in the westerlies and crossing N/S-extending mountains.
