During the spring in Assisi, it is possible to turn back the clock 600 years and plunge into the atmosphere of the Middle Ages. For three days the keys of the city are given to the “Master of the Field” and the city is divided into two parts, upper and lower, that compete against each other for the palio, a banner of painted silk. A good time is had with medieval competitions - from Gubbio crossbowmen in action to the re-enactment of the procession of the flagellants -, poetry contests and generous drinking in the old taverns of the town.
