In 1981 the final version of Mikis Theodorakis' "Canto General after texts by Pablo Neruda" saw its premiere at the Palast der Republik. During the rehearsals for the performance, Joachim Tschirner met with Mikis Theodorakis. Tschirner's encounter with the composer eventually lead to the production of "Canto General".
