A female six-toothed spruce bark-beetle, attracted by the bore meal crumbs (frass) containing pheromones, finds a male's borehole and crawls into it. Six females each gnaw a central gallery, the hatched larvae chew larval galleries perpendicular to the central gallery. Pupation and emergence of the young beetles follow. (Time-lapse photography). The juvenile beetles gnaw a hole outwards through the bark and fly away.
