The film begins to showing examples of how the phasic stretch reflexes in man are usually tested in clinical work. Normal reflexes and hyporeflexia and hyperreflexia, being symptoms of illness, are shown. Reflexes in man and in the exposed spinal cord of the cat are examined by electrophysiological methods. For analysis the stretch reflex is interpreted as a servomechanism which controls the length of the muscle. This function is demonstrated in animal experiments by means of technical models and animated drawings. Supraspinal control is represented as set point adjustment of the servomachnism.
