Goniopsis cruentata (Grapsidae), the mangrove crab, belongs to the semiterrestrial crabs with differentiated social interactions. The threat gestures against conspecifics are ritualized; the chelae are held like shields before the body with the tips pointed downwards. The females raise the claws, sometimes moving them jerkily up and down. The chelae of the males are held lower, close over the ground. The hypothetical phylogenetic relations to the chelae-up-down gesture of Grapsus grapsus is discussed. Against predators the claws are used as defensive weapons; they clamp onto the predator, can be autotomized and still hold fast reflexively.
