Bartoš is accompanied by the councillor's wife Pelegrinová and her daughter Melanie who the takes a fancy to tutor . The priest and Hugo's uncle arrive at the estate to celebrate Krista and Hugo's wedding. The tutor writes Melanie a letter. Krista and Heda secretly add a few words to the letter.
