Scenes at a carnival procession in Birkenhead. Replacement title (0.07). Carnival
passes right to left of camera. In the background are a factory (?) and a row of houses separated
by an alley. A small crowd lines the street. Participants in the carnival procession pass along
the crowd with collecting tins. Costumed walkers followed by a brass band; mounted colonial troop
and soldier; blacked-up minstrel and three fire brigade engines; comic characters - a drunk with
a huge papier-mache head; sailor pipe band; sign for St Mary's...Band; a carriage; a float
carrying lots of children with Union flags; cadets sailors marching in formation (2.41). Note:
Originally dated as c. 1900. The inclusion of the cipher ER (Edward VII) in Mitchell and Kenyon
402: Birkenhead No. 6; and a reference to the Royal family consisting of the King and Queen in
Mitchell and Kenyon 397: Birkenhead No. 4 of which this procession is part suggests a date after
1901.
