The film starts in a gym in Frankfurt. You can see a gymnast at a high bar.
The commentator tells that this is a athlet from the Federal Republic of Germany. The best athletes at this time are the Soviet Russians and Japanese.

Then the title of the documentary is displayed: ANATOMY OF AN EXERCISE. Then the opening credits are shown.

At the beginning you can see the sea and a beach where the athletes do a handstand. The commentator explains that this are the gymnasts from the German National squad. They practice once a year on the island of Sylt.

Then you can see the gymnasts on the beach do flashovers, somersaults and perform high jumps. Later the athletes do gymnastics at the parallel bars in the dunes.

Back in the gym we see Günter Spiess from Genzingen Freiburg prepering a new exercise. This athlet works together with the German coach Hans Friedrich. Finelly we see slow motion pictures at the high bar and the names of various exercises are identified and presented.
