Archbishop Makarios was kidnapped by the British in early 1956 and exiled to the Seychelles on the grounds that he fostered terrorism. In the summer of 1957, the British prime minister Harold Macmillan ended Makarios’ exile but did not permit him to return to Cyprus. Makarios went back to Cyprus in March 1959.
