The normal development of Triturus alpestris from the uncleaved egg to straightening of the embryo in the tail bud stage is shown in a time-lapse film. Cleavage, and its further progress to blastula, is shown first followed by gastrulation. In the vegetative area underneath the equator the blastoporus is formed. After closing of the blastoporus the neural folds appear bounding the neutral plate. When the neural folds are fused, head rudiment and tail bud become more evident. While the embryo straightens in tail bud stage, rudiments of somites and heart are clearly to be seen. Further gill, pronephros, optic and otic protuberances are distinct.
