Filmed from an elevated position. In the foreground head and shoulders of a man wearing a top
hat, bow tie and buttonhole. Below in the park are large crowds. Crowds lined up behind a barrier
at the edge of the park. The man turns to camera, raises his hat, and bows slightly (00.29). MLS,
elevated shot of crowds in the park, many acknowledging camera (1.04). Dense crowds. The crowd
divides briefly and then closes in. A man in a hat tosses something along the ground inbetween
the crowds and then up in the air and people try to catch the object. Some game is presumably
talking place but the activity is not seen. Crowds waving and acknowledging camera (1.46).
Different shot of crowds in park. In distance some children skip; a man twirls a rope. Crowds
jostling for position to wave to camera (2.05). Three children (two young girls and a toddler)
hand in hand pose for camera with other children behind them (2.22). Dense crowds. A woman at the
front of the screen tries to cajole her baby in a pram to wave to camera (2.48mins). Note: Egg
rolling took place in Avenham Park every Easter Monday. Early Easter morning the eggs would be
hard boiled and decorated. Girls and women wearing Easter bonnets would take them in baskets to
the Park. The eggs were rolled down the grassy slopes and when they broke they could be eaten.
Eggs represented fertility and continuity of spring-time. According to contemporary news reports
35,000 attended. The Poole family commissioned this film and one of the brothers can be seen
tipping his top-hat to the crowd. Poole Myriorama's toured all over the country with animated
pictures as part of their shows. Information provided by Professor John Walton in 'Mitchell
& Kenyon: Ceremonial Processions and Folk Traditions' in The Lost World of Mitchell
& Kenyon: Edwardian Britain on Film, Toulmin V. et al (2004), bfi Publishing. Plus
information on the Poole Family from the National Fairground Archive, based at the University of
Sheffield. Some people run down the slopes but it is not possible to see if they are egg rolling.
