In order to end a long war, the Sire of San Miniato proposes to the Sire of Vincigliata (Alfredo Robert) that they marry their children, Jacopo and Beatrice. Vincigliata’s daughter, however, is attracted to a young troubadour who serenades her under her window at night. When her father discovers the love story, he has the musician arrested and sentenced to death by hanging. Beatrice convinces a prison guard to let her loved one escape: they run off together in a boat directed for the open sea and the sire’s men chase them in vain. The sire himself is overwhelmed by the situation and dies.
