Zachariah is an impoverished Zulu who moves to Johannesburg to find work and send the money back to his family. He finds several different jobs in the city, but they are all marred by an overarching racism: he becomes a miner, a servant for a white family, and then works in a garage and a restaurant. During his free time he and his friends go to blacks-only dives, full of illegal liquor and heated debates over racial segregation. His wife and child join him in the suburb of Sophiatown, nut hope soon turns to tragedy. While Zachariah is being held and interrogated by the police, a black thug, whose life is even more squalid than his own, breaks into the family’s poverty-stricken home and kills his wife.
