Research on the plasticity in the visual cortex. The already well known sensitive period is described and the apparatus used to rear kittens in selectively oriented striped environments is shown. Both the behavioural and the neurophysiological effects are demonstrated on cats with exclusively horizontal or exclusively vertical stripes as their only prior visual experience.
