In sixteen graphic sections the film re-enacts many of the gross violations of civil rights suffered by Americans on a daily basis in the Thirties: the Ku Klux Klan brutally tar and feather trade union supporters, sharecroppers demanding a living wage are killed by sheriff's deputies. With a narration read (and sung) by the radical Paul Robeson, the film borrowed from the conventions of social realism and looked to Soviet filmmakers such as Eisenstein and Pudovkin for its editing style. Unlike other New Deal films, it offers no easy solutions and proposes a continuing struggle to defend basic rights. The US goverment attempted to have the film destroyed and it vanished from circulation until 1974.
