On 12 October 1944, the Germans left Athens. In the interim between 12 and 18 October things were unclear as to whether EAM and KKE intended to assume authority and as to their attitude towards the international agreements. The Left decided for the application of the Lebanon Charter and the Caserta Agreement and to uphold the spirit of national unity.

2. CROWD GATHERED IN HONOUR OF THE FALLEN RESISTANCE FIGHTERS

Large crowd gathered and memorial service to honour the last of those who were killed fighting in the resistance.


3. MARCH TO THE 1st (A΄) ATHENS CEMETERY

A march through the archaeological site of the temple of the Olympian Zeus (‘Stiles tou Olympiou Dios’) heading for the 1st (A΄) Athens cemetery. The people are holding various emblems and Greek, American, British, etc. flags.


4. SMALLER MARCH

A smaller march (probably held in Exarheia). Some people are armed.


5. LARGE CROWD IN THE STREETS OF THE CITY CENTRE

Large crowd gathered in the street at the city centre, bearing banners, various emblems and flags.


6. CAVALCADE OF US AND ENGLISH TANKS

Cavalcade of US and English tanks.


7. MOURNING THE DEAD AT THE EAM DEMONSTRATION

Mourning the dead at the EAM demonstration, held on December 3 outside the offices of the ‘Ethnikon Apeleftherotikon Metopon’ (National Liberation Front), in Korais Street. Coffins draped with Greek flags loaded on a lorry.
