The Skouras brothers came from Skourohori in Elia prefecture. Their father, a poor shepherd, had ten children. Three of those, Spyros, Giorgos and Haralambos left for the US in 1910. They worked as assistant waiters and newspaper vendors until 1914, when they opened the first nickelodeon, which was named ‘Olympia’. Ten years later they owned more than thirty cinemas. In 1929 they sold their cinemas to Warner Brothers Pictures, Inc., where Spyros Skouras became company manager. Between 1930 and 1932, he worked for Paramount, then moved on to Fox Metropolitan, which he saved from bankruptcy. In 1932, the Skouras brothers owned more than 500 cinemas on the West Coast. Spyros Skouras played a key role in shaping Twentieth Century–Fox, where he was appointed company president in 1942; he kept that post until 1962. CinemaScope was one of the major innovations he introduced. His downfall was the box-office failure of the extravagant epic ‘Cleopatra’. In 1969 he gave up cinema and turned to shipping.
