Sixteen-year-old Jitka, an orphaned hairdressing trainee, runs away from her children's home back to her old gang who spend their time eating in restaurants, visiting bars and stealing. The gang is led by Jitka's beloved, the brutal Vilda. During a visit to a dance café from where the gang run off without paying, Jitka catches the eye of the young waiter Tonek. Just to get the chance to see Jitka more often, the lonely Tonek joins the gang. After an unsuccessful robbery the gang members hide out in a cottage belonging to friends of Tonek. Here on the riverbank, surrounded by beautiful countryside and after meeting Tonek's friends, Jitka realizes that she has also grown fond of him and wants to live a different kind of life now. Vilda does not want to lose the girl, so he fights with Tonek and forces Jitka to go with him. Jitka manages to escape and finds her way back to Tonek. In Prague they stroll together through the city and fall asleep in the evening on a bench under Tonek's coat. Jitka wakes up in the morning, set on changing her life, and she returns to the children's home. After a time, now a different person, she meets Tonek in the garden restaurant on Petřín hill.
