Nanynka, daughter of a caretaker called Kulich, is going out with the school teacher Jindřich Novák. She keeps her meetings secret from her strict mother but the nosey Mrs Knedlhansová sees her and tells Mrs Kulichová. She watches the lovers, unobserved, but takes a liking to Jindřich and invites him to tea on Sunday. Jindřich asks for Nanynka's hand. Mrs Knedlhansová offers them the use of her apartment, and her daughter Albínka will be a bridesmaid. The landlord's two daughters, Tylda who is suffering from unhappy love, and the merry Amálka are also bridesmaids. The wedding is arranged by Mr Dundr, in whose apartment Tylda sees a photograph of the man she loves, Švalbenšvanc, and discovers that he works for Dundr. The whole apartment building is involved in the arrangements for Nanynka's wedding. Saloupek, a subtenant, finally decides to ask Albínka to marry him, Mr Dundr falls in love with Agáta, Nanynka's employer, and the landlord agrees to Švalbenšvanc courting Tylda.
